At the risk of being blatantly obvious, a Laptop (also called a Notebook) is a portable PC with a pop-up screen, that is small enough to sit on your lap! Laptops are lighter and smaller than desktop computers, and can be battery or mains powered, but typically rely on battery power when in the field. So they provide flexibility and portability beyond the standard personal computer, but are often more expensive.
Laptops are usually seen as desktop computer replacements, but despite component miniaturization and technological advancements, modern Laptops still typically weigh up to 12 pounds, making them portable and useful, but quite heavy and cumbersome for frequent mobile use. Laptops are larger than Netbooks.
